Chapter 1 | Desiring Elsewhere

‘Moving Discourse in conversation with Ocean Dobree’

March 2026

As part of chapter 1 - Desiring Elsewhere, Moving Discourse interviewed performer Ocean Dobree on their work RHIP.

In their performance RHIP, Ocean Dobree queers the white cube through embodied, gestural painting. Using the body – and hair in particular – as a tool of resistance, they disrupt the gallery’s immaculate appearance, transforming it into a site marked by movement, residue, and queer energy. The conversation centres on process over product, tracing how ephemeral performance leaves material and affective remains, and how these traces can be read through queer theories of utopia, potentiality, and the trace.

The interview has been filmed at: Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance, London.
