Moving Discourse in conversation w/ Aimée Ruhinda
As part of Chapter 2, Vision and Flesh, Moving Discourse interviewed choreographer and performer Aimée Ruhinda.
Central to her work is the exploration of the Madonna-whore complex. Historically, the female body has been constructed through the male gaze as an object of desire – either sacralized and virginalised or cast into shame. Positioned within this binary as either pure or sexually lascivious, Ruhinda critically engages with this visual tradition by inhabiting both states simultaneously.
In doing so, she reclaims agency over her body while also foregrounding her own sexual desire. The conversation reflects on the pleasure embedded in this act and examines how her practice actively redirects and destabilises the male gaze.
